Boardwalks are built to protect and preserve these fragkile grasslands from getting eroded away by the heavy amounts of traffic that come through the Routeburn Track. The chicken wire is to keep it from getting to slick when the boards get wet.
Leaning rocks form a small gateway over the trail on the upper reaches of the western side of the valley we just crossed this morning.
