With all the snow Nome gets, hydrants are given a little extra boost and a flat off the top so they can be found if burried.

Pilgrim Springs
The old Pilgrim Springs orphenage building and church from the days when the children were quarrentined from the adults who were all getting diphtheria. This is how the Iditerod started to transport the serum to Nome from Anchorage. This is about 60 miles from Nome.
