SOUTH POLE, ANTARCTICA: On a cloudy morning, Kris and I strapped on our skis and made our way back out to the buried LC-130 aircraft, Skier 917, that crash landed at the South Pole skiway (NPX) on 28 January 1973. But first we had to climb up and ski down a little mound of snow to start our 3 kilometer ski out to the plane.
SOUTH POLE, ANTARCTICA: There is still some cleaning up to do around the edges in the 7 meter hole down to the cockpit hatch.
SOUTH POLE, ANTARCTICA: It looks like the plane hasn't had an visitors for some time, as a good pile of snow has drifted over the two plywood sheets that cover the tunnel down into the cockpit. Over the winter, a significant amount of snow managed to accumulate in the tunnel that has been dug out by many visitors since the beginning of the summer season this year. See previous story.
